Shin Megami Tensei (ENG) App Reviews

Game of the year 19XX

Its held up astonishingly well. Compared to other SNES rereleases its got a much better sense of pace; its much quicker to give the player the reigns but not at the expense of building a compelling scenario. The combat has enough in the way of asymmetry and overlapping systems that its immediately compelling. Theres not the 5-hour preamble you get in most RPGs of this era. Excellent soundtrack, and Im surprised how natural the vertical controls feel. I look forward to translations for 2 and If...

Experience SMT in English for the first time!

For those who dont know, this is a port of the GBA version of Shin Megami Tensei and its a pretty decent one at that. My only frustration is that the virtual controller is a bit frustrating, especially when Im playing the game horizontally, the buttons are all over the place on my iPads screen. But, Im still enjoying myself and Im very thankful for the official English translation of this great game.

So much win

Ive been waiting for a game like this. Awesome!!!

Classic SMT!

Im so happy to finally be able to play the game that started the franchise in English. Its aged really well and has an awesome leveling and demon system, as to be expected from a Megaten title. Really hope to see some more translations brought over. Definitely recommend this to fans of classic dungeon crawling or fans of JRPGs in general. Minor complaints: switching between landscape and portrait mode doesnt always work very well. Also, can we get a real app icon? the current one is very dull!

Great game

A lot of reviews Ive seen online and places have only recommended this to only hardcore SMT fans while I certainly fall under this category I didnt start out SMT until nocturne and I still really enjoy this game. All in all I give it five stars

Classic SMT goodness

The gameplay is fun as it always has been, if you want something to compare it to that you might of played from the series it would be soul hackers. I myself am not a fan of Mobil games but the vertical control scheme is nice in both looks and functionality. If you are on the fence I would highly encourage that you give it a go.

Great Port of a Great Game

Perfect job Atlus USA! Im so happy to be able to own the original SMT. Worth a try for fans of the franchise or anyone looking for a deep RPG. Now please, Atlus, how about English releases for SMT2 and If... as well?

How to port to iOS

This release of SMT is the first iOS related thing Ive bought in a long time, and Im really glad I did. Playing an officially localized of SMT 1 is great, and I would surely buy similar versions of 2 and If...

Great, but not for everyone

Let me start with saying this game is absolutely amazing and I LOVE that we are finally getting an official release worldwide, but... I would not recommend this to eveyone. Shin Megami Tensei was originally released in 1992, this may be a port of the GBA version but it still plays very much like a game from 1992. The game is navigated in 1st person and an overworld map. If youve played Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, or any of the Etrian Odyssey games, or even the Wizadry games (if youre that old school), dungeon exploration is like that; 1st person dungeon crawling one square at a time.

Excellent!

Fantastic localization. If you love SMT Soul Hackers on 3DS get this game!

A-MODE DDS?

Does anyone know what this does? Ive yet to find anything online about it..

AWESOME!!!

First SMT game Ive ever played and so far its great! Ive just started but already the story is enthralling and I love talking to these crazy demons lol. Having an absolute blast!!!

Great for hardcore RPG gamers

If your idea of a fun game is one that holds your hand the entire way through, with a difficulty level defaulting to preschool age, then this is not the game for you. But if youre a fan of the great old-school dungeon-crawling level-grinders (such as Dragon Quest and the early Final Fantasies), then youll get great enjoyment out of this game. Or, to put it simply, this game is Pokemon for grown-ups (and it is AWESOME).

A-Mode DDS.

The A-Mode DDS is what Im assuming to be a feature that was either present in the GBA version of the game (Since vision items were introduced in that one) or is a new feature to the iOS version of the game. Its basically the equivalent of the Demon Compendium minus the ability to summon demons, any demons youve encounted in the game (Boss demons are included) will be present, when selecting the demon you can check its stats, magic skills, race, and has the origin of the demon plus a brief description of it. You can also view a vision items backstory, when selecting the vision item a small scene will play that explains how the item came to be or the signifigance that the item holds to the story. Its not majorly important, as in you dont need to quit out of the game and view these items in order to keep up with the storys plot, but theyre a nice bonus.

Bravo, Atlus.

You gotta give Atlus credit. No one was asking for a localization of SMT except for a small group of dedicated fans obsessed with a niche RPG series. While the overall game does show its age, its great to have a classic RPG available in English.

Best purchase in the App Store

Im glad Atlus took a chance and released this in the states. The touch controls work well, and the gameplay suits quick and long sessions equally well. It may be more expensive than most apps, but you get what you pay for. I havent spent this much time gaming on my phone since FF Tactics.

Wonderful

First iOS game ive purchased in years, never thought Id see an official translation. Please localize SMT2 as well. If... would be nice too, but 2 is a must :)

Yes!

Literally the best thing to happen to my iPhone

Request please!!

Please give us a real app icon. The current is lackluster.

Demon Apocolypse

Its way too confusing to find a given store or room (within one of the buildings) since the everything looks the same. The story is a bit ridiculous, yet entertaining.
